Preserving nature and making the built environment greener

The root of the word 'eco' is the Greek 'oiko' meaning home or environment.  To 'specify' is to name precisely.  Taken together, to 'eco specify' is to specify the type of place and environment we want.

ecospecifier's core idea of becoming a benchmark source of verified, life cycle based information of eco and health preferred products started in 2003, in collaboration with RMIT University's Centre for Design (CfD) in Melbourne.  An issue had begun to emerge in the design industry pointing to a lack of knowledge about green building materials and how they are easily integrated to green building rating schemes.  Indeed, the emphasis on all aspects of the built environment and both its environmental and healty impacts had gathered momentum.

ecospecifier realised that a new branch of knowledge was needed and to be rapidly shared and disseminated:

  • that successfully combines the principles and practices of sustainable building design with materials intelligence;
  • that can be turned into accessible resources and services that will increase ecological awareness and promote a more confident use of sustainability practices throughout the manufacturing and building industries;
  • that will inspire building and manufacturing industries to embrace an ethos that moves beyond environmental performance and compliance to one that embraces stewardship of the planet.
